Assessment
High-quality assessment is an essential part of what teachers do in the classroom. From a simple question and answer session to check if students are ready to move on in their learning to a formal examination, teachers are constantly gathering information about their students. The information they gather serves multiple purposes:
-
To help teachers plan: Assessment data informs lesson planning, ensuring that teaching is responsive to the needs of each student and that all students are appropriately challenged and supported.
-
To let teachers and students understand where they are in their learning and how to move on: By identifying current levels of understanding and skill, assessments help both teachers and students recognize progress and pinpoint areas for improvement, setting clear targets for future learning.
-
To monitor and track progress: Regular assessments allow teachers to track students' academic growth over time, identifying trends and patterns that inform teaching strategies and interventions.
-
To trigger intervention: When assessments reveal that a student is struggling, targeted interventions can be implemented promptly to address learning gaps and provide additional support.
-
To provide information for parents: Assessment data is shared with parents, offering valuable insights into their child's academic performance and areas where they may need extra help or enrichment.
Our Assessment Methods
At Little Parndon Primary Academy, we use a variety of assessment methods to ensure a comprehensive understanding of each student's learning journey.
1. Target Tracker: We use Target Tracker to assess children summatively three times a year. This tool helps us systematically record and analyse students' progress against national benchmarks, ensuring that we maintain high standards of achievement across the school.
2. End of Unit Assessments: At the conclusion of each unit, students complete low-stakes assessments designed to check their understanding of the material covered. These assessments help teachers identify any gaps in knowledge. Teachers then have allocated lessons specifically designed to address these areas, ensuring that all students consolidate their learning before moving on.
3. Formative Assessment Strategies: Our teachers use a range of formative assessment strategies, including questioning, observation, and classroom discussions. These strategies enable teachers to address misconceptions in real-time and provide immediate feedback that can move learning forward. Formative assessments are integral to our teaching approach, allowing for continuous adjustment and support tailored to each student's needs.
At Little Parndon, we believe that assessment is not just about measuring learning, but also about enhancing it. By using a variety of assessment methods and tools, we ensure that every student has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
