Geography
The purpose of the geography curriculum is to inspire a curiosity and fascination in pupils about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Students will be equipped with knowledge about places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with an understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. Geographical knowledge, understanding and skills provide the framework and approaches that explain how the Earth’s features are interconnected. Our students will develop contextual knowledge of the location of local and globally significant places. The skills that they master with us will enable them to collect, analyse and communicate with a range of data gathered through experiences of fieldwork that deepen their understanding of geographical processes; interpret a range of sources of geographical information, including maps, diagrams, globes and aerial photographs and communicate geographical information in a variety of ways; using a breadth of geographical vocabulary.
When developing our geography curriculum, we thought about the characteristics of our children, the local demographic and where we want the children to be when they leave us – "The Little Parndon child". We have ensured that we have built the curriculum around our values (Respect, Responsibility & Resilience) and our key drivers (Autonomy, Mastery & Purpose). We started with what our children already know when they join us and built upon this knowledge. We have ensured that our geography curriculum interweaves with our other subjects and interleaves within itself. Research shows that this approach increases memory, recall, academic performance and problem-solving skills, ensuring that we are “shaping futures through education.”
